Techniques to Catch a Shark

Commonly, the shark’s fisher uses different techniques to catch the big fishes, here are shortlisted 3 most frequently used techniques:

1: Longlining Technique

The long-lining is the most commonly used technique in the Gulf of Mexico and the Coast of the Atlantic Ocean. This practice includes the mainline – the first part of the bait which is attached to the hydraulic reel, a hook is attached to the mainline, and the mainline is thrown into the ocean which floats on the water surface.

The other part is the longline with which the heavy weights are attached which sinks towards the floor of the ocean. The bait set free to target the school of sharks. The longline consists of 600 to 800 hooks and is 7 to 10 miles in length. Once the shark is caught, it is usually brought out of the ocean, finned and sold in the commercial markets. The longline fishing process normally requires 3 to 6 days! Have patience!

2: Drift Drilling Technique

The drift drilling creates a wall of net in the ocean water to catch a shark, the nets are usually 800 to 1000 miles in length. The nets are released in the ocean water at night. The weight (food chunks to attract sharks) is attached at the bottom of the net, the nets are designed to entangle the gills of the sharks. Once the shark enters the net, the gills are trapped in a net line and prevent the sharks from escaping. This fishing technique is used to catch large fishes because the smaller fishes are able to move out of the net holes.

3: Strike Netting Technique

The strike netting technique is mostly applicable early in the morning around 1 to 3 am, so that the net should be retrieved with a fish until sunrise. Mostly small sharks are captured with this method, a motor is attached to the net to quickly encircle the sharks. If by any chance, a large shark got trapped then the reel slowed down, so that sharks cannot escape out. After that, the sharks are pulled out of the ocean water and the fins are removed before cutting off the net. This technique is used to catch the school of small fishes. The length of the net is only about 15 feet.

These all techniques require skills and are performed by the experts! Don’t be upset! We are also sharing some of the common tips and tricks to catch a shark!
